Akershus Princess Storybook Breakfast
|
This family style character breakfast offers food that’s about what you’d expect at a Golden Corral® restaurant but that isn’t what brings people to Akershus. It’s the princesses. Previously, this was a good place to meet the royal ladies. However, since they started “including” a picture package and raised the price to like $40, I cannot, in good conscience, recommend it. It’s eggs and bacon, people. |

|
Akershus Royal Banquet Hall Lunch |
For lunch, the food is much broader and better than breakfast with items like an Open-faced Chicken or Sirloin sandwich and Mushroom-stuffed Pasta. The appetizers are offered cold and presented on a buffet line but the entrees are served to order. It’s an alright meal but as long as you’re paying a premium for a picture package, get your princess fix at 1900 Park Fare or Cinderella Castle where the food is… well, good |

Akershus Royal Banquet Hall Dinner |
Dinner in Norway offers a wide board of fare, and of course, the same princesses. This meal includes the best food (and highest price) of the three meals available in the Norway pavilion but the appetizers are still cold and on a buffet. As for entrees, there are six to eight meats from which to choose including Traditional Kjottkake (Norweigian meatballs served with mashed potatoes, seasonal veggies, and Lingonberry Sauce). The entrees are all served to order and for the most part, pretty good. Dessert is a seasonal trio of uninspired, overly sweet things so feel free to fill up on dinner.

| Biergarten Restaurant |
On Oct 17, 1810, Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria celebrated his marriage to Princess Therese of Sachsen with one of the grandest festivals of Munich had ever seen. Thus the Oktoberfest began. At Biergarten, the tradition continues bathed in beer, music, and lots of stick-to-your-ribs meats, pastas and German salads. The price is standard for a non-character buffet and if you can’t get filled-up here, you need surgery. Don’t expect gourmet food but the show is good family fun and they have a good selection of German beers.

| Bistro de Paris |
Rich with the culinary ideals still held true from Calais to Monaco, Bistro’s homage to French culinary accomplishment has become the maxim to which more restaurants should aspire. Perfectly cooked meats with just the right French touch, tarragon, lavender, or the provencial blend. Fresh scallops, lobster, and snapper adorn this ever-changing menu. The hardest part is deciding what to order. So, for a reasonable price, you can sample a true degustation of gastronomic excellence in the prix fixe menu. Oh, and do not leave this restaurant without trying a dessert soufflé.

| Chefs de France |
The menu was created expertly, some complex items and some, uh, less haute ones (clap if you had to look up “haute”). However, French cooking is not an art, it is a science and the kitchen staff isn’t living up to the quality of the original creators. Chefs de France has fallen victim to the most common pitfall when the recipes aren’t created in-house… inconsistency. The food isn’t necessarily bad. Just keep in mind, one day you can have the greatest meal of the year here and then, one day you’ll sit there expecting Gordon Ramsay to burst in and take the place over.

Chip and Dale's Harvest Feast at Garden Grill |
Served family style, the food here is like mom’s Thanksgiving dinner is she invited Farmer Mickey, Pluto, and the chipmunks. The service is good and the price is reasonable for a Disney Character meal. The character interaction is good and you don’t have to worry about missing them while you’re up getting a refill. The food comes to you. I’d call it the second best character meal at WDW. If only the time you spent eating counted towards the wait time for Soarin’.

| Coral Reef Restaurant |
A beautiful restaurant set along a 5.7 million gallon aquarium, the Coral Reef gets mixed reviews in spite of a great chef, strong management, and a veteran staff. They use the freshest ingredients, proven recipes and winning technique. The only thing negative I can think of at Coral Reef is the noise, oh heavens the noise. As Coral Reef easily offers the coolest atmosphere and some of the best food available on the Disney Dining Plan single credit list, the large amount of families continually bounce sound around the relatively small, glass-lined room.

| La Hacienda de San Angel |
Fresh food from the kitchen, not the steam table. That’s what sets this contemporary Mexican restaurant apart from the normal Americanized junk food. The spice levels are sadly what you’d expect from a restaurant in a theme park. Nonetheless, the food here is quite good for the money and get this… desserts that aren’t sopapilla. ¡Viva la Hacienda!

| Le Cellier Steakhouse |
Spotty service and high prices. If you can get past that, the new gourmet Le Cellier is ready for you. Mostly because since they became 2 credits on the Dining Plan (for dinner), reservations are a bit easier to acquire. The Cheddar Cheese Soup is top notch and the Duck Two-Ways is as good as it is good (little chef joke there). Each item is expertly prepared by a great kitchen brigade.

| Nine Dragons Restaurant |
You’ll see some of the usual Chinese restaurant board of fare and some traditional items that haven’t been Americanized or Theme-Parkified. The menu changes seasonally so instead of writing about any particular item, let me assure you that this ain’t no PF Chang’s. 9D is the real deal. The only negative is the selection of horrible ice creams for dessert. Trust me, skip dessert and wander next door for a pastry at Kringla.

| Restaurant Marrakesh |
Lots of people are afraid of this restaurant because they think the food will be too exotic. I think that’s silly. Don’t worry; they don’t have monkey brains or calf intestine. It’s all choice cuts from lamb, chicken, beef, shrimp, and fish. They just prepare them with native herbs and spices and they use pasta or grains where Americans would use breading. So many items on the menu are favorites of mine; I have a hard time not over-ordering. I absolutely can’t skip the Harira Soup (like Italian lentil soup), Brewat Rolls (seasoned beef baked inside a pastry), and Seafood Bastilla (grouper, shrimp, & veggies baked in a light pastry). Then, a little couscous or Roast Lamb, followed by some baklava, all in the company of two-man Moroccan Combo group and belly dancer. Sometimes the drink service can be a little slow and the dessert selections are limited at best. Nonetheless, Marrakesh is a Do-Not-Miss!

| Rose & Crown Dining Room |
I’ll go several trips and miss this restaurant/pub and then when we go back, we always wonder why we’ve been skipping it. The Samosas are excellent, though a little spicy. I love the lump crab appetizer (when available). You can’t ever go wrong with the fish & chips or whatever curry they’re serving but give me the Tamarind Pork Loin any day, lunch or dinner. On the negative side, I'd like to see a little more diversity in the menu selections and a little more speed out of the kitchen. Also, while R&C is a popular restaurant pre-Illuminations but don’t hold your breath for a patio table. They are harder to get then an NHS dental appointment

| San Angel Inn |
Beautiful and romantic. From first glance, the food has a lot to live up to. While the menu is imaginative, the food is only slightly better than average. The beef isn’t nearly tender and flavorful enough to be in a $24 - $27 entrée. Most of the chicken and seafood dishes are pretty good. The sauces are about the only thing exceptional about the place. If they improved the quality of the meat and the line cooks would do as much work on presentation as the designer did on the atmosphere, they’d have a good restaurant.

|
| Teppan Edo |
Teppanyaki grills don’t really do it for me as a method of dining. I don’t need singing shrimp, onion volcanoes, or Japanese egg rolls to make my meal complete. The food is rarely exceptional and almost always overpriced. Teppan Edo is no different. The do have great sushi, sure but if you have a great Japanese steakhouse at home, eat there and save the vacation meal slot for something you can’t get on a random Tuesday next door to the local pet store.

|
| Tokyo Dining |
With an expansive view of the Epcot lagoon, a more relaxed atmosphere, and a much more attentive staff than Teppan Edo, Tokyo Dining is leaps and bounds above its predecessor and it’s sister restaurant, Teppan Edo. Specializing in sushi and using methods to go back to 1603, they offer several tempura dishes worth a try plus salads and the usual hibachi items.

|
| Tutto Italia Ristorante |
Quite a bit better than the canned Italian food you get at Tony’s Towne Square or Mama Melrose’s, Tutto brings a more authentic board of fare. The menu is quite a bit more varied than the usual Italian eatery so even the pickiest diner can find something. All the ingredients are fresh and the wine list is above average. The problem seems to be execution. There are three things that make a restaurant excel or fail, consistency, consistency, and consistency. Tutto Italia isn’t maintaining consistent food quality. People shouldn’t leave a $100 dinner saying “pretty good”. People should leave with their schedules in their hand trying to figure out when they can fit in another visit.

| Via Napoli |
“New York is the only place in the U.S. for great pizza”. I’ve heard it more times than I can count. Well, that’s wrong. Here’s what should be said, “New York and Epcot’s Via Napoli are
the only places in the U.S. for great pizza.” I could tell you that they have ovens built within, and sent direct from Naples, Italy. I could tell you that they use the best tomatoes in the world for their sauce, imported from San Marzano, Italy. I could tell you that they import the world’s best flour for Napoletana pizza dough, Caputo 00. I could tell you they spent a fortune to find a Florida spring that emits water virtually identical to that of Naples. But, I’m not. What I’m going to tell you is this… get out your schedule, call 407-WDW-DINE, and make a reservation for Via Napoli. Do it now.
